Basketball culture got off to a slow start at the University of Maryland, not really getting an established program until the 1920s. In the 1953-1954 season, the Terrapins finished second in the newly established Atlantic Coast Conference. Throughout the next few years, the Terrapins would pull off impressive upsets of higher ranked teams, though they only made it to the NCAA Tournament once. Things began to turn around, however, in the 1970s. Under the leadership of Coach Lefty Driesell, the team saw a change in fortunes. In 1973 they advanced all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The following year they played one of the most remarkable games in ACC history, losing the conference tournament championship 100-103 in overtime to North Carolina State. Ten years later the Terrapins would secure their own ACC Tournament championship. Gary Williams took over in 1989 and firmly established the team's modern legacy. In 2001 the team made their way to their first Final Four, and the following year they clinched the NCAA Tournament Championship title.
