Building of a Powerhouse
The Toronto Maple Leafs were originally founded in 1917, but they did not become a part of the NHL until 1926 as one of the Original Six teams alongside the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and the New York Rangers. Early on the Maple Leafs quickly became a dominate team in the league, winning the inaugural Stanley Cup Championship game against the then Vancouver Millionaires. Within their first five years in the league, the Leafs won their first two Stanley Cups. In 1927 the team was bought out by the famous Conn Smythe who immediately renamed the team from the Toronto St. Patricks to the Toronto Maple Leafs, as an ode to the team’s Canadian heritage. Throughout the 1940’s the Maple Leafs dominated the NHL, bringing home five more Stanley Cups to the city of Toronto. After winning their ninth title in the 1950-1951 season, the Maple Leafs entered their first Stanley Cup drought after their star player had gone missing in a plane crash. Many fans even deemed the team doomed until they found the remains of their star player, resulting in an eleven-year Stanley Cup drought. In 1962 the “curse of Barilko” came to an end when the Leafs dethroned the defending champion the Chicago Blackhawks. For the next four seasons the Maple Leafs brought home three of the four Stanley Cups. The Maple Leafs have won thirteen Stanley Cups, but have not won since 1967: making it the longest Cup drought in the history of the NHL.
Toronto Maple Leafs Today
In the over 50 years since they have last hoisted a Stanley Cup, the Toronto Maple Leafs have experienced their fair share of highs and lows. With many failing seasons under their belt the organization hired Brendan Shanahan as the president, and not long after his hire he began transforming the struggling team. In 2016 the team finished in last place within the league, something that hasn’t happened to them since the late 1980’s. But in their failure was a saving grace, a first overall draft pick in Auston Matthews. Building around his young talent and additions of Morgan Rielly and Patrick Marleau, the Maple Leafs entered the 2017 playoffs in the wildcard position but were ultimately eliminated by the Washington Capitals. The team qualified for the playoffs once again in 2018 but lost in the first round to the Boston Bruins. During the 2018 off-season the Leafs acquired star center man John Tavares from the New York Islanders, and under his leadership they qualified for the 2019 playoffs. Today with the star power that the team has, it is only a matter of time before they end their drought and bring home another Stanley Cup to the city of Toronto!
High Stake Rivalries
Being one of the oldest teams in the NHL, and one of the members of the Original Six means that the Maple Leafs have several intense rivals hiding in the bushes. In total they have four major rivals within the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and the Ottawa Senators, three of the four also being members of the Original Six. Their newest rivalry is with the Ottawa Senators, who only entered the league in 1992-long after the Leafs had seen their glory days. The two had played within difference conferences for much of the 90s, until the league realigned in 1998 putting them within the same conference and division. Since then the Leafs and Senators have faced off in four post season appearances against each other. Due to the proximity of the two cities, they play each other frequently throughout the regular season drawing in fans for both teams!
Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadiens
Their most notorious rivals are the Montreal Canadiens, who is the only other team in the NHL to have more Stanley Cup wins than them. The rivalry between the two is the oldest in the entire league, as the two have been facing off on the ice since the inaugural season of the NHL. During the 1960’s the two teams dominated the entire league, with both of the teams being the only ones accounted for as Champions during that period. For a period, the rivalry between the two suffered, as they were removed from the same conference. Today the rivalry has heightened once again, but more so this time as a cultural war between the French-Speaking Canada and the English-Speaking Canada. With the two teams being the most decorated in the entire NHL, you do not want to miss a match-up between them!
