Making Slam Poetry Cool Again

Fatimah Nyeema Warner grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where she spent time in the YOUMedia project, an initiative for young artists to create and network. There, she made friends with many local talents, including Chance the Rapper. She spent her time competing in open mic and slam poetry competitions. She gradually moved to rap by freestyling with her friends. Noname stated that she was influenced by Avril Lavigne, Andre 3000, Kanye West, and Missy Elliot. Before even releasing her own work, She was featured on Chance the Rapper and Mick Jenkins' mixtapes, and also appeared on Saturday Night Live. In 2016, She released her first mixtape titled Telefone, which she spent three years producing. She notes the struggles of growing up as a black woman in Chicago. Rolling Stone stated that Telefone was the most thought-provoking hip hop delivered in years. Later that year, she collaborated with Saba on "Church/Liquor Store", a song that describes the placement of liquor stores next to places of worship in the Westside of Chicago. Noname released Room 25 two years later, mainly due to a financial obligation. This album also received universal acclaim from many music critics.
