Young but Powerful Team
The Nashville Predators were only founded in 1997, making them one of the newer teams in the NHL. Nashville was desperate to have a professional hockey team and almost became home to the New Jersey Devils, until the team made a last-minute decision to stay in New Jersey. Instead, the Predators were established, and have been based at Bridgestone Arena. The logo of the team depicting the head of a saber-toothed tiger was created based on the skeleton of the same creature found in downtown Nashville during an expansion era in the 1970s. The league left the naming of the team up to the fans with many voting for “Ice Tigers”, “Attack”, and “Fury” but the name that garnered the most votes for the logo was the Predators.
Right out of the gate, the Nashville Predators struggled to get their footing in the already dynamic league, finishing at the bottom of the standings for their first two seasons of play. By their third season they enjoyed moderate success after achieving their 100th victory in 2001. In the 2003-2004 season, the Predators qualified for their first Stanley Cup playoffs, only to be eliminated in the first round by the Detroit Red Wings in six games. After qualifying for the playoffs year after year, the Predators went through a bout of decline as they were transitioning through new ownership. After several signings of famous players such as Pekka Rinne, Filip Forsberg and current captain Roman Josi the Predators have seen loads of success in the skating rink. In 2014 the Predators hired new head coach Peter Laviolette, who in his first season brought the team to the playoffs despite being eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks who went on to win the Stanley Cup. In the 2016 off-season the Predators added key player from the Montreal Canadiens, P.K. Subban to their roster. Under him and Mike Fisher the Predators advanced to their first Stanley Cup Finals in 2017, but were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins. With much of the 2017 no longer playing under the Predators franchise, fans are eager to see what the new guys can bring to the ice!
Nashville Predators vs. Chicago Blackhawks
Although the Predators are relatively new to the league, they still have a deeply rooted rival with one of the most dynamic teams in the league, the Chicago Blackhawks. While the two have been in the same division since the Predators were established in the late 90s, the rivalry did not come to the forefront until the 2009-2010 season when the two met in the post season. The two have met a total of three times in the post season with the Blackhawks defeating the Predators twice and going on to win the Stanley Cup. The staff of the Bridgestone Arena even attempted to prevent Blackhawks fans from purchasing tickets during their meetings back in Nashville to “keep the red out”. In 2017 the Predators had their first upset over the Blackhawks, only letting them score a total of three goals though the whole series. Watching any game between the two, either regular season or playoff, is sure to be an exciting one!
