About Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey holds the bar high as the best-selling female artist in America. With over 200 million records sold and a legacy that includes 5 Grammy Awards, 21 World Music Awards, 21 American Music Awards and 14 Billboard Music Awards, she is widely known as the "songbird supreme."
Fans attending Mariah Carey concerts are amazed by her five-octave vocal range and her whistle register. So, it may come as little surprise that the Long Island native first attempted to sing by imitating her mother, an opera singer and vocal coach. Long before Mariah Carey tickets were selling out at the world's biggest venues, this young talent was singing for friends and family in her childhood home.
Early Life
Mariah Angela Carey was born in Huntington, New York on March 27, 1970. Growing up her mother Patricia was an opera singer and vocal coach. It was under her mother’s training that Mariah would begin to really develop her gift. In high school Mariah began to write songs with fellow classmate Gavin Christopher. After she graduated high school she moved to Manhattan where she worked as a waitress to pay for her rent while she was trying to make it in the music industry. She would work at the restaurants during the day and then go right to the studio after to record demo tapes, handing them out to music labels but always got turned away. It wasn't until she met Brenda K. Starr that her voice would become recognized by recording studios. Starr began taking Mariah with her to numerous recording sessions which allowed her to showcase her voice to more producers. Starr introduced her to Tommy Mottola who was the head of Columbia Records. After listening to Mariah’s demo tape, he immediately signed her to the company. From there Mariah was truly able to blossom; recording several albums and reaching the top of the charts.
Rise to Fame and Career
In addition to being one of the greatest voices in the world, Mariah also writes all her songs, produces many of her records, and moonlights as an actress. Starring in high-grossing films like "Precious", "Tennessee", "WiseGirls" and "The Butler", she proves that she's much more than just Mariah Carey the concert singer.
Over the years, Mariah has collaborated with many of her peers. In 1995, she sang alongside Boyz II Men and spent 16 weeks at the top of the Billboard 100 chart with "One Sweet Day." That same year, she featured rapper ODB on her hit song "Fantasy." "Fantasy" was the second song in history and the first by a woman to debut at number one. "Fantasy" was written by Carey and was produced by both Carey and P. Diddy, who went by Puff Daddy at the time.
Mariah's second Christmas album, "Merry Christmas II You" was released in 2010. This project includes a duet with her mother Patricia on the track "O Come All Ye Faithful." If you see Mariah Carey in concert during the holiday season, you can often hear many of the tracks from this bestselling album.
After three decades as a superstar, Mariah isn't slowing down. She is the mother of twins Moroccan and Monroe, who accompany her on her extensive Mariah Carey tour schedule.
