Early Life and Career
Lil Nas X was born as Montero Lamar Hill on April 9, 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia. When he was in the fourth grade he picked up the trumpet and excelled in it sitting in the first chair throughout his years of playing. After quitting out of fear of not being cool, Lil Nas X graduated and attended the University of West Georgia for a year before dropping out. While still in high school Lil Nas X worked on trying to gain fame via several social media platforms. After he found little success on Facebook videos and Vine, he moved to create fan Twitter accounts for his favorite rapper Nicki Minaj. His accounts gained significant attention but ultimately Lil Nas X denied that he was the main operator behind the accounts.
Old Town Road and Mainstream Success
Lil Nas X released his first single in December of 2018, the single was a country rap song titled “Old Town Road”. The song debuted at the 83rd spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, however shortly after its release it went viral thanks to the “Yeehaw Challenge” on TikTok. After it climbed to the number one spot on the Hot 100 chart, the song also charted on the Hot Country Songs chart and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. After widespread controversy the song was removed from the Hot Country Songs chart, as it was deemed by Billboard for not having enough of a tie back to the genre, although its references of cowboys lead many to believe it does. In April of 2019, country music legend Billy Ray Cyrus publicly supported Lil Nas X and offered to sing a verse within the song to bring in a country element. The remix of the single featuring Billy Ray Cyrus was also released in April of 2019 and instantly shot to the top of the charts, remaining in the number one spot of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for seven weeks. Lil Nas is expected to release a full-length album later in 2019.
