A Glimpse into the Past
Inspired by the epic novel written by Victor Hugo, writer Alain Boublil and composer Claude-Michel Schonberg began collaborating on what would become known as one of the most successful musicals of all time. The musical took the stage for the first time in September of 1980 in Paris, France. During the time that they were performing the musical they were a hit, having over 100 performances and totaling over 500,000 audience members. Due to a clause in the contract the musical production was closed after only three months. Three years later the musical was brought to the attention of famed Broadway producer Cameron Mackintosh, who later transformed the original French Script into English. In October of 1985 Les Miserables premiered in London. Despite terrible reviews from critics, the public absolutely adored the play, soon breaking box office records. In March of 1987 the show was brought to the United States, originally as a pre-Broadway test in Washington, D.C. and then later in New York City on Broadway. Since their Broadway premier there has been several off-Broadway versions and touring productions. There even has been a Hollywood film featuring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russel Crowe.
The musical follows the events of various characters living and dying in revolutionary France, including Jean Valjean, a poor former criminal who seeks to redeem his past but who cannot shake the pursuit of the law-obsessed policeman Javert. Meanwhile, young orphan Cosette and revolutionary Marius fall in love amidst the violence and bloodshed that surrounds them, and an entire cavalcade of deeply drawn, complicated characters round out the intertwining stories that define "Les Miz", as it's called by fans.
Les Miserables is one of the most successful and loved musicals of all time, and now is the time to see what all the fuss is about- don't wait "one day more" to buy cheap tickets to this musical extravaganza.
