A History of the Grand Rapids Ballet

The Grand Rapids Ballet was founded in 1971 and will be celebrating its 50th year performing in just two short years. It was initially founded by Sally Seven and started a school for its professional dancers in 1983. That same year, it merged with the Grand Rapids Civic Ballet and the name changed to what it is today. The direction of the school passed to Charthel Arthur and the school started to receive regional recognition. In the 1990s, the school started to contract professional dancers for the first time and the ballet group took off, gaining national recognition as the performances only became more and more impressive. Now, the group is known all over the country for its quality performances and inspirational style.
