Franchise History
The team was founded during the 1967 NHL expansion as the Minnesota North Stars based in Bloomington, Minnesota. Before the beginning of the 1978-1979 NHL season, the team merged with the Cleveland Barons after the league granted them permission due to each team’s respective financial struggles, and ultimately relocated to Dallas for the 1993-1994 NHL season. At the time of their move, the Stars were one of the southern most teams in the league along with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. At first the team was very obsolete in Dallas, with not many fans knowing they were even there. After a very successful inaugural season, word about the Stars spread like wildfire. In their first season in Dallas the Stars qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and in the first round swept the St. Louis Blues before being eliminated by the Vancouver Canucks in the second round. In the 1997-1998 season the Stars had another monumental year, bringing home their first President’s Trophy and making it to the Western Conference Finals against the Detroit Red Wings.
First Stanley Cup Victory
After a disappointing departure in the 1998 playoffs, the Stars added Brett Hull to their roster. The 1998-1999 season was one for the books, with the Stars setting several franchise records and bringing home their second President’s Trophy. Throughout the playoffs the Stars fought a hard battle, making it to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Buffalo Sabres. The Stars won the series in six games after Brett Hull scored a highly controversial cup-winning goal in overtime. To this day the goal is one of the most controversial goals ever scored in hockey!
Dallas Stars Today
Early in the 2000’s the Stars were a highly competitive team around the league, qualifying for the playoffs just about every year. Despite being one of the strongest teams in the regular season, they were never able to convert in the post season. Throughout their struggle the Stars were able to land some excellent players in the likes of Jaromir Jagr, Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, and Ben Bishop. In recent years the Stars have qualified for the playoffs, only to be eliminated early on.
Currently, the team plays their home games at the American Airlines Center. To date the Dallas Stars have won eight division titles in Dallas, two Presidents’ Trophies as the top regular season team in the NHL, the Western Conference championship twice, and one Stanley Cup victory during the 1998-1999 season.
Must See Matchups
Being relatively new to the league, the Dallas Stars have no distinct rivalry with another team. As one of the up and coming teams in the Central Division, it is only a matter of time before rivalries begin to bud. Currently some of the best matchups to see are with the Nashville Predators, Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks, and Minnesota Wild. With some of the most dedicated fans in hockey, attending a game between the Stars and one of their division rivals will be one that you do not want to miss!
The Dallas Stars have been home to powerhouse players such as Brett Hull, Ed Belfour, Joey Nieuwendyk, Mike Madano, and brothers Derian and Kevin Hatcher, who have all been inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. Dedicated fans never fail to miss a Dallas Stars Game to see these amazing players live and in action! You want to make sure you are right there in the center of all the excitement and intensity: not stuck in the back corner- or worse, at home! Get your cheap Dallas Stars tickets today!
