A Promising Beginning
Named to memorialize the Great Fire of 1871 and founded on its 126th anniversary, the Chicago Fire was an early expansion team in Major League Soccer. They quickly established themselves as a juggernaut in the league, winning both the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup in their inaugural season. The team successfully defended its U.S. Open Cup championship title in 2000 but was dispossessed of the MLS Cup by losing the 2000 MLS Cup final against Kansas City. The Chicago Fire FC continued to show strength throughout the early 2000s, winning two more U.S. Open Cups and the 2003 MLS Supporters' Shield. Recent years have seen a decline in the fortunes of the Fire, but the legacy of the team still threatens rivals at every match.
