A Foundational Team
Originally known as the Chicago White Stockings, the team was an original founding member of the National League in 1876. It was not until 1903 when MLB was officially formed that they changed their name to be the Chicago Cubs. The team plays within the Central Division of the National League at the famed Wrigley Field. Early on, the team saw some success winning the World Series in 1907 and 1908. In the years following the team would have several post season appearances, but they were never able to secure the win again. That is, until the 2016 season when they won their third title in a nail biter game seven. The Cubs are one of two major league teams from the city, sharing the spotlight with the Chicago White Sox, which is a member of the American League Central division.
Breaking the Curse of the Billy Goat
The curse originated in 1945 from William Sianis, who was the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern. The owner of the Cubs Philip K. Wrigley insulted his goat. While there are many stories around what Sianis actually said, boiling it down he declared that the Cubs would never win another World Series. Later in his life William tried to lift the curse but was unsuccessful. His nephew even brought the goat to the field in the 1980s in an attempt to lift the curse. The Cubs had made it to the World Series since the curse however they were unable to win it. Losing to the Mets in 1969 World Series, after a stray black cat walked past the Cubs dugout. In 2016, the Cubs made it to the World Series where they faced off against the Cleveland Guardians. The final decision came down to game seven on November 2nd. The Cubs clutched the victory winning 8 to 7 runs. It was their first World Series win since 1908. That game has been declared as one of the greatest World Series - Game seven in the history of the MLB.
Historic Ballpark - Wrigley Field
Built in 1914, Wrigley Field has hosted MLB teams for over 100 seasons, all of which the Chicago Cubs have called it home. The historic ballpark is the second-oldest baseball field in the majors, just behind the Boston Red Sox's Fenway Park, which was built two years earlier in 1912. Formerly known as Weeghman Park, the field was owned by Charles H. Weeghman who started Chicago's first MLB team, the Federals.
Cubs Rivalries
The Cubs' biggest rival - known as the Route 66 rivalry and The Downstate Illinois rivalry - is the St. Louis Cardinals. The heated competition between the two teams goes back to 1892 and continues today with big moments including the Lou Brock trade and the '98 McGwire-Sosa homerun chase. Some of the team's greatest players include Sammy Sosa, known for hitting 545 runs during the 13 seasons he played for the Cubs. Before Sosa were other famous names, such as Ryne Sandberg, who is best known for hitting two game-tying home runs against the Cardinals in 1984 and his superb skills as a second baseman. Die-hard Cubs fans will also remember Ernie Banks, also known as Mr. Cub, who joined the Cubs in 1953 and won the MVP Award in 1958 and 1959. His impressive skills have even earned him a statue outside Wrigley Field.
