History of the Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames were originally founded in 1972 under the name the Atlanta Flames, and they were originally located in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1980 the team was relocated to Calgary where they became known as the Calgary Flames. Early on in their existence the Flames made a name for themselves. During their eight years in Atlanta they qualified for six playoffs, however they only were able to win a total of two games effectively eliminating them from the post season. In their first season as the Calgary Flames they made it to the semifinals before getting eliminated by the Minnesota North Stars. Overall the Flames have a total of 22 playoff appearances, one leading them to the Stanley Cup. The team has a total of 6 Division Championships, 2 President’s Trophies, 3 Conference Championships, and 1 Stanley Cup which was won in 1989.
More recently the team has not seen much success in the post season, only qualifying three times in the past ten seasons. Things have been looking up for the team with younger players being added to the line-up such as Sean Monahan in 2013 and Johnny Gaudreau in 2014. With the help of these two rookies in 2014 the Flames were able to get their first playoff series win since 2004. Upon failing to make the playoffs in 2018, Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan was relieved and Bill Peters was hired.
The Calgary Flames Arena
For the first three seasons that they were in Calgary, the Flames played all their home games in the Stampede Corral. In 1983 the Scotiabank Saddledome was built to be the new host for the Calgary Flames, which is where they still play to this day. The Saddledome is in the southeastern side of downtown Calgary within the Stampede Park. The arena is most known for being the home to the Flames as well as the arena for hockey and figure skating in the 1988 Winter Olympics. They do however host other events such as concerts, conferences and other sporting championships.
Rivalries
The Battle of Alberta is one of the biggest rivalries that the Flames have since they relocated to Calgary back in the 80’s. It is comprised of the only other professional hockey team in their province; the Edmonton Oilers. The Vancouver Canucks are a division rival of the Flames and historically the Winnipeg Jets have rivaled with the Flames during playoff appearances.
