About St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants

When talking about baseball rivalries, some of the most common ones that stand out are Dodgers vs. Giants, Cardinals vs. Cubs, and Yankees vs. Red Sox. However, one rivalry that is not as talked about but still worthy of a discussion is the San Francisco Giants vs. St. Louis Cardinals.

It all started around a century ago in 1892. The St. Louis Cardinals, then known as the St. Louis Brown Stockings joined the National League and played their first official game against the New York Giants. Even though the winner of this game is still a mystery, the two clubs have since been slugging it out against each other.

Today, the two teams are considered the strongest contenders in the National League, and have represented the NL in the World Series for five consecutive seasons.

The repeated scuffles and trash talk between the teams is what keeps this rivalry alive. Let’s take a look at some of the hostilities between the two teams.

San Francisco Giants vs. St. Louis Cardinals – The Major Hostilities

1986: Vince Coleman of the Cardinals tried to score from third on a wild pitch. His team was leading 10-2 at the time. His next time up, Frank Williams, the Giants’ pitcher drilled him which started off a brawl.

1988: Will Clark of the Giants slid wide at second base in an attempt to take out Oquendo. This attempt angered both Oquendo and shortstop Ozzie Smith, resulting in another brawl, with Giants player Bob Brenly in the middle of it.

2011: In 2011, Carlos Beltan, the outfielder, was traded from the Mets to the Giants in return for Zach Wheeler and $4 million in cash. However, Beltran could not lead the Giants as he was expected to. Soon Beltran decided to switch teams, saying that the Giants did not do enough to improve themselves in the off-season. And what other team would he switch to but the St. Louis Cardinals.

This ended up intensifying the rivalry between the two teams even more. The Giants won the 2012 World Series stepping over Beltran and his new team. Beltran made three errors during the series, which delighted the Giants fans, who thought of him as a traitor.
