About Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals
The rivalry between the Phillies and the Nationals is fairly new. Even though it is not as deeply entrenched as those between the Yankees and the Red Sox, the Cardinals and the Cubs or the Dodgers and the Giants, it is still one to look out for. The rivalry stemmed from several incidents.
One such incident was when the Washington Nationals signed Jayson Werth from the Phillies. Further fuel was added to the budding rivalry as the Phillies took over the Nationals Park whenever they wanted to - they celebrated their victory in the division in the Nats Park twice in three seasons. Then came the Take Back the Park campaign by the Washington Nationals that planned to block Philly fans from buying tickets to games at the Nationals Park.
With such incidents taking place off the field, the simmering rivalry is expected to come to a boil.
Notable Moments - Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals
The Senator’s Tweet - Things between the two teams escalated and get out of hand as the Take Back the Park campaign came into the picture. Soon, the Senator of Pennsylvania, Bob Casey was involved and tweeted (@SenBobCasey) the following,
I'm calling on the @Nationals to reverse course on a reported plan to block @Phillies fans from buying tickets to games at Nationals Park.
He wasn’t the only one who took to Twitter in support of the Phillies. Proud Philly fan and lead actor of “Bones”, David Boreanaz also raised his voice on Twitter, “I say stand up Philly Fans!”
The Pitch Hit - Things escalated further when Philadelphia lefty, Cole Hamels, admitted that he deliberately tried to hit Bryce Harper from the Nationals with a pitch. I was trying to hit him, the Philadelphia player said I’m not going to deny it. Hamels nailed the teen from Washington with a fastball in the small of his back. After admitting to hitting Harper on purpose, Hamels was handed a suspension.
