About Oakland Athletics vs. Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners joined the American League West Division in 1977. The Oakland Athletics were a well-established franchise by that time.
From their first game on April 1, 1979, that saw only 250 fans at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum, to games that now draw thousands of baseball fans, the Mariners-Athletics rivalry has evolved into one of the fiercest in the MLB.
The four year span from the year 2000 to 2003 was one of the most intense phases of the rivalry between the two teams. In 2000, the Mariners lost the division title to the Athletics on a tie-breaker. The following season, the Seattle Mariners were able to beat Oakland Athletics in 10 out of 19 games. In 2002, although the Mariners secured 93 wins, they finished third behind the Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels. The next season, the Mariners again won 93 games but finished second behind the Athletics.
Memorable Moments
The Seattle-Athletics rivalry has given baseball fans plenty of moments to cherish. Among these one of the most memorable moments for Seattle supporters was when pitcher Fernando Rodney tied the team’s single season save record with the 45th save against the Athletics at the Safeco Field on in 2014. He went on to collect three more saves in the final sixteen games of the season. These 48 saves by Rodney helped to keep the team in playoff contention for that season.
Another surprising point in the history for the two teams’ was when Ken Griffey Jr. made his Major League debut for the Mariners against the Athletics on April 3, 1989. The young player hit a line drive double off Oakland Athletics’ pitcher Dave Stewart at the Oakland Coliseum. This hit not only stands out in the match-up history of the two sides but also marks the beginning of his extraordinary career.

Besides his memorable MLB debut in 1989, he is a 13-time All-Star and a 10-time Gold Glove winner.
