From the moment you enter The Retreat, you know you’re in for something special. The front lawns are nicely manicured and you are greeted by the security staff who welcome you to your holiday home. Upon entering the property, there is a spacious entry hall with doors that lead out on to the fabulous verandah. The verandah is where you’ll spend most of your time. It’s large, covered and has excellent views over the Martha Brae river below and the valley beyond. The views are private with no overlooking and you’ll see green trees and bushes to the horizon. We visited after the Cat 5 Hurricane and, sadly some of the trees in the foreground have died. But actually, nature has done a good job of clearing some of the dense growth and the trees have a magical, silver quality to them, which changes colour with the position of the sun. Darker in the morning and much brighter by afternoon. That the house itself was damage-free is testament to the quality of the build. There is a beautiful, wooden table on the veranda with enough seating for 12 people. Perfect for alfresco dining. You also look down onto the lovely pool area. It is very well maintained and clean. Back to the house, whilst there are some signs of age and a need for small renovation projects, the fixtures and furnishings are all in good order. The sofas are comfortable and clean. The beds are very comfortable throughout and the pieces of furniture are works of art. The wall art is exquisite. The housekeeping is excellent.
