Columbus is the county seat of Muscogee County, Georgia. Columbus is approximately 35 miles from Auburn, Alabama, and 100 miles from Atlanta. Locals and visitors enjoy the outdoors as they walk along the Columbus Riverwalk, a trail that meanders from downtown to Fort Benning. Columbus is also home to many parks and nature trails, including Standing Boy Creek State Park, a 1,500-acre park that offers hunting, hiking, swimming, boating and camping facilities. Columbus’s primary airport is Columbus Metro Airport (CSG), which is located off exit 8 of U.S. Interstate 85. The city of Columbus also offers a public transportation system called METRA. The service provides mass transit throughout Muscogee County. The Columbus Airport Shuttle offers shuttle service from Columbus to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport (ATL) and Fort Benning.
Columbus is sunny throughout most of the year. The Festival by the Lake is held in nearby Florence Marina State Park. The festival includes live entertainment, food vendors and even boat rides. Visitors to Florence Marina enjoy bird watching, water-skiing and fishing.
