Athlete Turned Musician
McGraw was born as Samuel Timothy McGraw on May 1,1967 in Delhi, Louisiana. His mother was a waitress and his father was a professional baseball player with the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies. Growing up McGraw did not know who his biological father was and for most of his childhood he went by his stepfathers last name- Smith. When he was 11 years old he met his biological father for the first time, but they did not form a relationship until he was 18 years old. Growing up Tim would play sports competitively, landing him a scholarship playing baseball at Northeast Louisiana University. An injury plagued his playing career causing him to turn to music. He would play guitar and sing to make money. In 1989 he realized music was his passion and he dropped out of college and moved to Nashville.
In 1990 McGraw got recognized by Curb Records after his father played his demo single to a friend that had a connection with the label. In March of 1991 his first single was released, and it was almost an immediate fail. In 2004 McGraw released his second album which undoubtedly became more successful than his first. Singles such as “Indian Outlaw”, “Don’t Take the Girl” and “Down on the Farm” made the album the best-selling country album of 1994. The release of this second album shot him to the forefront of country music. Along the way having several singles rose to the top of the charts including; "Just to See You Smile”, “Live Like You Were Dying", and “It’s Your Love”. He became half of America's sweetheart couple when he married fellow country superstar Faith Hill in 1996. The two have toured together several times, selling out venues across the world.
More Than Music
Tim McGraw is mainly known for his musical talent; however, he also is a music producer, actor and is involved in several charities. McGraw began his acting career in 1997 on The Jeff Foxworthy show however, it was not until 2006 that he would land his first leading role in the movie Flicka. After the release of that movie, McGraw began landing more roles such as those in Friday Night Lights and The Blind Side.
In 1994 McGraw founded the annual Swampstock event, which started as an annual softball game but has now evolved into a celebrity softball game and concert. All the proceeds from the event raise money for his hometown little league programs, ensuring that the kids have parks, equipment, and scholarship funds. He is also known to put on concerts where all the proceeds go to various causes such as children with disabilities, natural disaster relief efforts and the American Red Cross.
