Description

Most people may find it surprising that Katy Perry was actually a Christian artist before she gained fame and topped the charts with songs like I Kissed a Girl and California Gurls but it’s true and, for over 10 years, she actually playing music as Katy Hudson.

Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California in the 1984 and, as the daughter of two pastors, she was told that secular music was a sin wasn’t allowed to listen to it. As luck would have it however, she was introduced to a different kind of music (mainstream, natch) one night as a child when she slept over her friend’s house for a slumber party and, even though religious music remained her preferred music for a few years, the pull of mainstream music was very strong.

The first person she worked with in the music industry was Glen Ballard, a hit maker who would work with Alanis Morissette on a number of her hits. After that she teamed up with a Grammy nominated songwriting team called the Matrix, who had written a number of hit songs for the likes of Shakira, Korn and Avril Lavigne. They had plans to record music of their own rather than writing and producing for other groups and wanted to have Kerry as one of their 2 main singers but the project never got off the ground. Portions of it did make it to the public however and, in 2004, Perry was called “the next big thing!” by Blender magazine.

Interestingly, one of the songs that Perry had worked on with the Matrix was given to Kelly Clarkson a few years later and I Do Not Hook Up ended up being a Top 40 hit with the singer. It wasn’t until 2008 and her One of the Boys album, and its breakout hit I Kissed a Girl, that Perry finally made it on her own. That album was a chart topper in 20 countries and made it into the Top 10 in the United States.

She released her fourth album, Prism, in 2013, and one of the songs on it, Roar, became a number one single. In October of that year it hit number one on not only the US but also the UK charts and the song Dark Horse followed it as a chart topper shortly thereafter.

Perry is obviously a talented performer and her life act has been held by critics. She’ll be on tour this summer and her fan base continues to grow. Although she recently split with her husband John Mayer, she’s focusing on her new Prismatic world tour.
