A passion that wouldn't die
Born in Burbank, Bonnie Raitt grew up playing guitar as a hobby. It wasn't until college, when she befriended blues promoter Dick Waterman and relocated with him to Philadelphia that music became the driving force in her life. She first gained attention after a memorable performance at New York City's Gaslight Café, resulting in a record deal. However, while critics adored her, Bonnie struggled to connect with a commercial audience. In 1977 she released Sweet Forgiveness, the first album to reach commercial success. Throughout the years, Bonnie has woven strong ties between her music and activism, participating in benefit concerts and even performing at the first Soviet/American Peace Concert in Moscow in 1987. However, in the 1980s her popularity declined. But in 1989, her album Nick of Time brought a firestorm of long-awaited success. She swept up several Grammy Awards in the following decade and was listed in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" list, all culminating in her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
