About San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants

Being members of the same league and division can often create rifts between both the teams and their fans. The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants are no different. Both teams are part of the National League NL West Division. While the San Francisco Giants are clearly the more successful team, the San Diego Padres, in their comparatively short tenure, have proven to be a competitive match-up.

The two teams have squared off against each other on a number of occasions. Here are a couple moments that define the Padres Giants rivalry.

Padres Giants Close Encounters

Guzman Shows them Up – After being let go from the Giants in 2010, Jesus Guzman got his chance to show his former team what they missed out on. In 2013, Guzman hit a two run home run against his former team the Giants. After striking the ball he took a little too long admiring his hit and on his way to first base turned around and yelled at the Padre bench. Madison Bumgarner got his chance in the next game and threw way inside to Guzman. This then sparked an all out brawl between the Padres and the Giants benches.

September 28, 2005 – In their second season at their new home stadium Petco Park, the Padres did the unthinkable. Having won their division only three times previously, the Padres met the much stronger Giants in this all important game. The Padres crushed the Giants 9-1 and clinched the West Division title. This win booked them a place in the postseason after seven long years.
