A History of Sooners vs Longhorns

The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns rivalry is a true American college football rivalry. Known as the Red River Showdown, these two teams have met once a year at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, TX during the State Fair of Texas since 1900. The Red River Showdown name came from the Red River that forms part of the boundary between Texas and Oklahoma. The winner of the Red River Showdown gets to take home the Golden Hat and the Red River Rivalry trophy. The governors of the two states also exchange the Governors’ trophy.

Currently, Texas leads the rivalry 62-48-5, but that does not stop the Sooners and their fans from showing up. Since the end of World War II, the series is just barely in favor of Oklahoma at 37-36-3. Oklahoma has won four games in the past five years, and hopes to continue that trend this season. The Sooners Longhorns rivalry is ranked third on a list of top rivalry games in college football.

The Oklahoma Sooners has had 377 players drafted into the NFL. There have also been five number one overall picks come from UO: Lee Roy Selmon in 1976, Billy Sims in 1980, Sam Bradford in 2010, Baker Mayfield in 2018, and Kyler Murray in 2019. Oklahoma became the only school in history to have three players selected in the first four picks of the draft in 2010.

The Texas Longhorns has had 346 players drafted into the NFL, 44 of them drafted in the first round. Three Longhorn alumni were number one overall picks: Tommy Nobis in 1966, Earl Campbell in 178, and Kenneth Sims in 1982.
