Rich Matchup History

The matchup between the Dodgers and the Yankees dates back to the beginning of the 20^th century when the league decided to add a third team into the New York City market. At the time it consisted of the then Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants who are now known as the San Francisco Giants. Originally known as the New York Highlanders, the Yankees were based out of the Bronx and regularly played against the Giants. However, the Dodgers and Yankees met for the first time on the same diamond in the 1941 World Series in New York. Taking their fifth title in six years, the Yankees defeated the Dodgers in five games. The Dodgers and Yankees would meet in the World Series again six more times before the Brooklyn Dodgers became known as the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After the move to Los Angeles, regular season appearances between the two became infrequent. In total there have been 81 total meetings between the Dodgers and the Yankees, 65 of them have been World Series meetings and 16 have been in the regular season. Since their move to the West Coast, the Dodgers and the Yankees have only met in the post season four more times, with the most recent World Series matchup in 1981 when the Dodgers took victory over the Yankees.
