The rivalry between Clemson University football and Florida State football is one fans everywhere eagerly wait for every season. This rivalry was also known as the Bowden Bowl for a period due to the Seminoles being coached by Bobby Bowden and the Tigers being coach by his son Tommy Bowden.

A History of Tigers vs Florida State

Both members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Tigers have played the Seminoles annually since 1992, but the rivalry started to emerge before that. In 1988 the No. 3 Clemson Tigers hosted the No. 10 Seminoles, which resulted in a devastating Clemson lost that costed their national title hopes. The following year, Clemson avenged that lost and won 34-23.

The Bowden Bowl marked a resurgence of this rivalry in 1999. The first meeting of the father and son was the largest crowd ever to watch a game at Memorial Stadium at Clemson University. This meeting resulted in 17-14 win by Florida State. The Bowden Bowl came to an end in 2007, with Bobby Bowden narrowly coming out on top, with five wins and four losses.

The end of the Bowden Bowl did not mark the end of the Clemson-Florida State rivalry. The games in 2008 and 2009 both came down to the final quarter with the home team coming out on top. The series remained evenly split for the next two years. In 2012 Florida State began a three-game win streak. Not to be outdone, Clemson came back in 2015 with a vengeance and won, beginning their five-game win streak.

Both Clemson and Florida State have had several alumni go on to be pro football players. Clemson has had 243 players drafted into the NFL. Nineteen of these players went on to win Super Bowls. Similarly, Florida State has had 288 players drafted into the NFL. In 2015, Jameis Winston became the highest-drafted Seminole when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took him with the No. 1 overall draft pick.
