September 25, 2006- After the devastation of hurricane Katrina, this game marked the official re-opening of the Superdome. The game was nationally televised, becoming one of the highest rated programs in the history of ESPN, and had a packed audience. The Saints dominated the game and would win 23-3.
In the first quarter of the game, Steve Gleason, the New Orleans safety, clocked a punt which his teammate Curtis Deloatch would then recover in the end zone for a touchdown. To commemorate that event, a statute of the punt block was put up outside the Superdome and called Rebirth, to signify the resilience of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
