Founded in Macon, Georgia in 1969 by celebrated guitarist Duane Allman, the band originally consisted of legendary musicians including guitarist Dicky Betts, bass player Berry Oakley, drummer Butch Trucks and additional drummer Jaimoe. Duane Allman soon added his brother, Gregg to the band as keyboardist and lead singer, and the original band was complete. They released albums including the self-titled, “The Allman Brothers Band”, “Idlewild South”, and “Live at the Fillmore East” which Rolling Stone called one of the greatest live rock albums ever, and also named #49 of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The bands growing success grew as their live shows became an essential fan experience, placing Allman Brothers concert tickets in high demand.
They found success early before suffering the tragedy of losing Duane Allman in a motorcycle accident in 1971. Tragedy struck soon after with the loss of band member Berry Oakley in 1972, after the release of the successful “Eat a Peach album”, which was released in 1972. Despite the tragedy, the band moved forward with additional members, continuing to work together over the years off and on until today.
In addition to glowing critical and commercial success, the band has celebrated notable achievements throughout the years. In 1995, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2012, The Allman Brothers received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, ensuring their place in history as one of America’s most notable group of musicians.
