Located near the central northern coast, Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) puts visitors in the commercial heart of the island; the busy city of Kahului. Although most guests head west to Kaanapali or south to Kihei, which are the two main resort areas on the island, you’ll also find other attractions like quirky Paia town and rugged Maliko Bay are just a short drive away from the airport.
Maui has a simple highway system, but the mountains prevent roads from looping around the island. Therefore it definitely helps to have a rental car with GPS navigation to make your way to the area’s destinations. If you're staying near Kahului, you're in a great spot to start the Road to Hana, the famous scenic highway out of Paia. Then, you can check out family-friendly beaches in Kihei, or sip Mai Tais at a luau in the whaling town of Lahaina.
Direct flights between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Maui will take about five and a half hours. If you have a layover in Honolulu, the main gateway into the islands, you could explore even more attractions in the Aloha State. Getting to your final destination from Kahului Airport is easiest by car, so don't hesitate to book your rental at one of the airport's on-site agencies.
