Travelers can head to Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) using I-45, US-59, the Hardy Toll Road, or the Sam Houston Toll Road. Once you arrive, park in one of the onsite lots varying in cost and proximity to the terminal. Enjoy your in-flight movie, as typical flight times are just less than four hours. Once you land at Oakland Metropolitan Oak International (OAK), climb aboard the BART public transit system, or pick up a rental car at the airport.
While in Oakland, spend time in Jack London Square. This waterside space is bustling with activity, and is perfect for a mid-afternoon stroll. Take a gondola cruise on Lake Merritt. This wildlife refuge is home to egrets and herons, and is surprisingly close to downtown.
If you have your kids with you, make sure to visit Oakland Zoo; a 100-acre zoo with nearly 60 different exhibits. To gaze in awe at the heavens, stop at Chabot Space and Science Center. This working observatory houses an array of impressive equipment, much of which you can use during your visit.
If you plan to depend on the public transportation system during your visit, stay in Downtown Oakland. For a more exotic jumping off point, select a hotel in Chinatown. The weather is pleasant in Oakland year-round. If you like it a bit warmer, visit from June to September when the average high is in the mid- to low-70s.
