Flights to Honolulu International Airport (HNL) take eight to 11 hours, and upon landing, you will be 6 miles from downtown Honolulu and 10 miles from Waikiki. You may rent a car and take H-1 to Honolulu, or take the bus, a cab, or a courtesy shuttle if your hotel provides one.

Attractions and tips

One of the great attractions of Honolulu is the Pearl Harbor Memorial and memorials to the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri.

The number one beach destination of visitors to Honolulu is Waikiki, famed for its crescent-shaped coastline and white sands.

Elsewhere Iolani Palace is a neo-classical palace completed in 1882 for King Kalakaua and served as home to Hawaii’s royalty for a time before being transformed into a museum in 1978. Diamond Head is a dormant volcano just east of Waikiki, and is a popular attraction and hiking destination for tourists.

Honolulu was home to the family of legendary King Kamehameha I, who moved his entire court there in 1809 following a decisive battle during which he assumed control of the Hawaiian Islands. The royal housing complex remains at the junction of Queen and Bethel Streets.

It is natural to expect warm, tropical weather in Honolulu year-round, with frequent and sudden showers. Waikiki lodging is the most popular and expensive.
