Poised to radically shift R&B
Born in St. Louis but raised in New Jersey, Solana Rowe grew up inspired by everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Björk to Lil Jon. She started recording her music, taking her stage name from the Supreme Alphabet. In 2012 she released See.SZA.Run, with its follow-up EP coming out the next year. She signed with Top Dawg, who had been following her since the president of the company met her at CMJ years before. She recorded "Child's Play" with Chance the Rapper, performed at SXSW, and sang with Rihanna at the Brit Awards. In 2017 SZA unleashed her debut album, Ctrl, featuring singles "Drew Barrymore," "Love Galore," and "Broken Clocks." SZA's music is fluid, as she draws inspiration from all articulations of art, dancers and filmmakers, gymnastics and painters. Her lyrics have hypnotized listeners, a freestyle approach that delves into universal themes while spinning out into ambiguity.
