History

The orchestra was founded by Ureli Corelli Hill in 1842, as the third philharmonic orchestra in the United States. When the orchestra was first founded it went by the name Philharmonic Society of New York and they played their very first concert at the Apollo Room located on Broadway. After performing for four seasons in New York, the organization decided that they were in need of a new concert hall. In 1846 the orchestra organized a benefit concert, where the money raised would go towards the creation of a new concert hall. Although the orchestra was extremely popular for its time, the steep price of tickets during the Civil War era deterred many from attending the concert, thus pushing back the creation of the concert hall. Throughout the history of the orchestra, they have been plagued with the shifting interests of audiences, financial struggles, as well as competition coming in from other forms of entertainment. Despite all of this, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra remains one of the most popular orchestras of all time, winning dozens of Grammy Awards and other accolades.

The New York Philharmonic Orchestra Today

Today the New York Philharmonic Orchestra plays at their home base of the David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. The orchestra also travels around on tour for those who are not able to make it to the Big Apple to see them! Fans of the orchestra can see them throughout 2019 in not only New York but also in Vail, Colorado at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.
