The Catamounts have long been an integral part of the athletics program at the University of Vermont. They entered the ranks of Division I in the 1970s after snagging two consecutive ECAC Division II titles. Vermont made its first foray into the post-season in the late 1980s with a debut at the 1988 NCAA Tournament. In 1990 the University of Vermont founded the Catamounts Cup, a tournament between Vermont and three teams held around New Year's Eve – though it wasn't until 2005 that the Catamounts won their first cup. The Catamounts dazzled in 1996, when they first snagged the conference regular season championship and then went on to win a spot at the NCAA Tournament Frozen Four. Vermont has sent several athletes on to the pros, including half a dozen Stanley Cup winners and Olympians.
