The University of Rutgers women's basketball program had its first official tip-off in 1974, boldly beating Princeton by a sixteen-point margin. In 1982 the Scarlet Knights won the final AIAW Tournament by rising above the Texas Longhorns. Throughout the 1980s, Rutgers continued to dominate the conference, pulling in both regular season and tournament championship titles. In 1986 they made their NCAA Tournament debut and climbed all the way to the Elite Eight. After upsetting the No. 1-seeded Georgia in the regional finals, Rutgers went on to the Final Four. There they were sorely beaten by Tennessee by a ten-point margin. Seven years later they had their chance for revenge when they made it to the NCAA Championship Game, again facing off with - and again losing to - Tennessee.
