Hardships in Childhood to Success as an Adult
Winfrey was raised in poverty in Mississippi by her single mother who was also a teenager. Her childhood was filled with devastation, as she has stated that she was molested and impregnated in her early teens. At the young age of 14 she gave birth to a premature son who died in infancy. After this Winfrey moved to Tennessee to live with her father. It was there that she scored a job in radio while she was still in high school. At 19, she worked for the local news in her area as a co-anchor. Success continued to follow her hard work, as she transferred to a daytime talk show and boosted their ratings from third to first in the Chicago area. After this she started her own production company.
Winfrey essentially began a more intimate form of media communication that we call the tabloid talk show genre. Winfrey broke the taboos of the 20th century and gave LGBTQ people a platform to enter the mainstream on television. In 1994 he was inducted in the National Women’s Hall of Fame. In 2008, she began her own network titled Oprah Winfrey Network. In 2011 Winfrey’s show had the series finale, then in 2013 her show was ranked the 19th greatest show on television of all time.
2020 Vision Tour
In 2020 Oprah went on a cross-country arena tour in hopes of making the year one of transformation for her audiences in terms of mind, body, and spirit. Each show featured different celebrity guests, wellness speakers, and people who wanted health and happiness and because of it, took charge of their lives. Guests included: Lady Gaga, Tina Fey, Amy Schumer, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Obama, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Gayle King, and Julianne Hough featuring her Kinrgy Method at each stop! This was a full day event that you won’t want to miss. The show days began with a pre-show dance party (how fun!) and then moved into an interactive session that Oprah held encouraging audience members to act and create a plan in 2020. Then the guest speaker would talk and motivate guests, followed by Julianne Hough having everyone involved in a movement workshop.
