History
The North Carolina State Wolfpack Football program dates their start back to March of 1892, when the college was known as The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. They were originally known as the Aggies and their designated colors were blue and pink. Although the team was officially founded in 1892, it was not until 1893 that the Aggies would play their first intercollegiate game. Early on in the program’s existence they focused on establishing themselves, which often led to performance being placed on the back burner. By 1913 under the leadership of Edward Green the program had brought home its third conference title. In 1918 the school was renamed to North Carolina State University, and in 1921 the athletes became known as the Wolfpack. In 1947 the Wolfpack qualified for their first ever bowl appearance, which was the second annual Gator Bowl. For a period of time the Wolfpack entered into a performance slump, the coach that helped pull them out and put them back on the winning track was Earle Edwards. From 1954 to 1970 Edwards brought home 5 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and brought the team to two bowl games. In 1979 North Carolina State won another conference championship under Bo Rein. Over the next several years the Wolfpack had several bouts of success, but they also had their fair share of failure. In 2012 Dave Doeren became the coach of the Wolfpack, a position that he still holds today.
Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Wolfpack play all of their home games at the Carter-Finely Stadium. They compete within the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference as members of the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA. The Wolfpack were founding members of the ACC, after previously being members of the Southern Conference up until 1953. Although the Wolfpack have never won a national championship game, they have brought home several conference championships as well as they have participated in over two dozen bowl games. A handful of Wolfpack alumni have also gone on to play professionally in the NFL including for teams such as the Houston Texans and the Oakland Raiders.
Rivals
Like many collegiate football programs, the North Carolina State Wolfpack have their fair share of rivalries. Among them include the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, the Clemson Tigers, the South Carolina Gamecocks, and the East Carolina Pirates. The most historic rivalry belongs to the Tar Heels, dating back to 1894 when the two first met on the field. The two face off every year despite playing within different divisions and is one of the most exciting Wolfpack games you could attend. No matter who the rival is, the Wolfpack put it all out on the field making a rivalry game one of the most exciting games of the season.
