A Basketball Cinderella Story

After finding success in Division III, the Highlanders moved up to Division I in 2006. The first few years in as a D-I team were a struggle, with NJIT posting some depressingly grim records. In the 2012-2013 postseason, the Highlanders took the first step towards the national spotlight when they snagged the Great West Conference regular season championship. NJIT basketball games soared in popularity when they beat No. 17 Michigan in 2014, with some publications calling the game the upset of the year. NJIT's campus stores were sold out of athletic gear as fans of Michigan's rival teams went to support the enemy of their enemy. In 2017 the program built a brand new arena for the team, with fans flocking to NIJT's Wellness and Event Center to cheer on the Highlanders.
