The Career of a Lifetime

John Prine was born on October 10, 1946 in Maywood, Illinois. Growing up he had shown an interest in music, but it wasn’t until he was 14 that he would begin to learn the guitar under the instruction of his older brother. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. After his time in the military was over he moved back to the United States to Chicago, where he began working as a mailman. He continued to work as a mailman for five years, only performing and writing music as a hobby. After being reluctant to perform at several open mic nights at a local bar, he was finally egged on to perform one of his original songs. To his luck in the audience that night was a movie critic who ended up writing him a great review. From the moment that review went live Prine became a central figure in the Chicago folk revival.

In 1971 Prine was signed to a record deal under Atlantic Records, and later that year he would release his first self-titled album. The track included already popular songs “Illegal Smile” and “Sam Stone”. After the official release the album was widely praised, with some fans and critics referring to Prine as the next Bob Dylan. After the success of his first album, Prine would go on to release three more albums with Atlantic Records before signing over to Asylum Records and releasing an additional three albums.

Throughout the early 80s Prine would write and release several new albums. In 1984 he left Asylum Records and created his own record company Oh Boy Records. Under this record label he continued to release music throughout the 90s and early 2000s. In February of 2018, Prine released his first album in over 13 years, The Tree of Forgiveness. The album featured hit song “Summer’s End”, and later became his highest charting album ever on the Billboard 200 chart. During the later months of 2018, Prine was nominated for induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Career Altering Complications

John Prine was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in 1998. The masses were found on his neck and required him to undergo massive surgery for their removal. The procedure required Prine to relearn how to speak again, as it effected both his tongue and vocal cords. At the end of it all Prine was left with a completely different tone and vocal range, giving him more of a gravel like sound. In 2013 Prine was once again faced with the terrible disease, this time attacking his lungs. After surgery and several weeks in physical therapy he was back on stage performing all his hits for his biggest fans.
