Crafting a vision draped in dreamy music
Samuel Beam was already an artist, a painter and a filmmaker, before he got into professional music. When a friend lent him a four-track recorder, he started producing demos of songs he had written and collected over the years. After getting one of his songs included in a compilation album, Beam caught the ear of Sub Pop Records. Beam dubbed himself Iron and Wine and recorded the first album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, at home with acoustic guitars and banjo. Iron and Wine covered a lo-fi version of "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service, which jumped in popularity when it was featured on the Garden State soundtrack. Iron and Wine's third album, The Shepherd's Dog, was lauded by Paste magazine as one of the best of 2007. Beam's talent draws artists from all genres to collaborate with him, including Jesca Hoop on Iron and Wine's 2016 album, Love Letter for Fire.
