A musical message that outlives lineups
Led by songwriter Robert Pollard, Guided by Voices began in Dayton as a lo-fi band playing the local bar circuit, independently releasing limited runs of their albums. By the early 1990s Guided by Voices had drummed up a fan base in the college rock scene, and they had started performing beyond Dayton. Their shows became famous for Robert Pollard's onstage antics, as well as copious amounts of drinking and a barrage of short, full-throttle songs. Despite accolades from Rolling Stone and MTV, the original lineup fell apart and Pollard had to reorganize the band in 1997. The band seemed to have run its course again in 2004, disbanding after an epic 4-hour, 63-song concert. But when a reunion tour was announced six years later, cheap tickets vanished immediately. Several albums followed, though the future of the band was continuously in doubt. Another split was announced in 2014, but the band was back together just two years later to play at the Sled Island Festival, releasing Please Be Honest soon after.
