Born in North Carolina, Fantasia Barrino started singing at a young age. At the age of 19, she competed in American Idol, flooring the viewers and judges with her poignant and powerful voice. Simon Cowell praised her final performance of "Summertime" as the best in any American Idol season. Following her win, her debut single, "I Believe," smashed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her first two albums netted her six Grammy nominations in total, but it was her 2010 single "Bittersweet" that secured her first golden gramophone for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Her unbelievable voice has also led her to Broadway. She starred in The Color Purple to wild acclaim, fans flocking to see her breathe life into lead character Celie.
