Shawntae Harris grew up in Chicago, the foundation of her musical career starting when she sang in her church choir. When she was a teenager, she rapped her way into winning a local contest sponsored by Yo! MTV Raps. As a result, she met rising stars Kris Kross, who in turn introduced her to Jermaine Dupri. He brought Da Brat onto his So So Def label, and in 1994 they released her debut album, Funkdafied. The record was a smash hit, debuting at No. 1 on the rap albums chart and making Da Brat the first solo female rapper to reach platinum status. She started collaborating with other artists, including superstars like Kris Kross, TLC, Missy Elliott, and more. She even appeared in a movie with Shaquille O'Neal. Her status grew as she was featured on more and more remixes, including Mariah Carey's "Loverboy" with Ludacris, Destiny Child's "Survivor," and Dem Franchize Boyz on "I Think They Like Me." She's been nominated for two Grammy Awards and continues to collaborate with other artists, even mentoring up-and-coming rappers on the show The Rap Game.
