Criss Angel was born as Christopher Nicholas Sarantakos on December 19, 1967 on Long Island. From a young age Criss began showing an interest in magic, even beginning to perform in shows at the age of twelve. By the time he was in high school he was performing at event venues around his local area including at restaurants and the Wine Gallery in East Meadow. After graduating high school, he walked a different path than most teenagers, denying going to college despite his parent’s disapproval for his magic. He hit the road alongside other traveling acts, where he would not only perform on a regular basis but also study to perfect his skill set. While working on mastering his skills, Criss would avoid contact with other magicians to differentiate himself. He did not want to get wrapped up in the same mindset as them and wanted to have a unique style of magic.

Criss first became a household name in 1994 when he was featured on the ABC special Secrets. From 1994 to 1997 Criss would perform in several shows and movies before he finally landed his own television series Criss Angel Mindfreak. One of his very first performances for his new show included him submersing himself in a tank of water for 24 hours, which would go on to set the record for the longest amount of time a human has been submerged in water. Through his provocative, unbelievable stunts Criss skyrocketed to fame performing at sold out venues across the world.
