The Rise to the Top

Chuck Liddell was born as Charles Liddell on December 17, 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. Growing up, Liddell and his siblings were raised by their single mother as well as their grandfather. As children their grandfather had taught them boxing techniques, getting them involved in the sport from a very young age. When he was only twelve years old he began taking karate lessons, something which he still attributes his success to in fighting. Throughout high school he was a starting linebacker on the football team, as well as a starting wrestler on the wrestling team. After he left high school he attended California Polytechnic State University as a Division I athlete on their wrestling team. In 1995, Liddell graduated from college and began a career in amateur kickboxing. Three years later he made his professional debut in the UFC winning a fight against Noe Hernandez. Over the course of a few years Liddell quickly rose to the top of the ranks after winning against some of the top fighters in the UFC including Kevin Randleman and Tito Ortiz. After years of being at the top of the UFC holding on tight to his title, Liddell eventually was defeated by Quinton Jackson effectively losing the title he had worked so hard to maintain. As the years went by Liddell lost his dominance in the UFC, quickly sliding down to the bottom of the rankings. In December of 2010 Liddell announced that he would be retiring from the UFC as a fighter and would take the position as the Vice President of Business Development within the UFC. After nearly eight years of being retired, Liddell announced that he would be coming out of retirement to fight against Tito Ortiz. After a long-fought battle, Liddell lost the fight via knockout.
