Over a century of musical excellence

The Boston Pops Orchestra got its start in 1885, forming shortly after the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Boston Pops was envisioned as a 'lighter' alternative to the impressive but sometimes niche music of the Symphony – and the Pops soon found a very enthusiastic audience. Over the years, the orchestra has performed everything from George Gershwin to Frank Sinatra, gospel music to Broadway show tunes. Legendary composer John Williams led the orchestra for thirteen years, and to this day the Boston Pops movie soundtrack performances are some of most popular of the year. The Boston Pops also performs special holiday concerts. For the 4th of July the orchestra takes center stage at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade, stunning audiences with renditions of patriotic music. Under Keith Lockhart's direction, the Boston Pops has toured overseas, released over a dozen records, and won its first Grammy nomination.
