About Las Vegas Raiders vs. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are coming home! Established in 1959, Los Angeles was Chargers first city of residence. After only one season in Los Angeles, the Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961 and changed their name to the San Diego Chargers. More than half a century later, in 2017, the Chargers owner announced the team was moving back to the Greater Los Angeles area.

Las Vegas Raiders, formerly the Oakdland Raiders also called the city of Los Angeles home from 1982-1994. Back then they were called the Los Angeles Raiders. Established in 1960, the Oakland Raiders, like the Los Angeles Chargers were part of the American Football League (AFL) that merged with the NFL in 1970. Both teams are now members of the American Football Conference (AFC) West Division.

As with any conference members, the Oakland Raiders and the Los Angeles Chargers are locked in a fierce rivalry. Here are a couple of memorable moments that define the Raiders Chargers rivalry.

Memorable Moments in the Raiders Chargers Rivalry

Oct 27, 1963 – This fall day turned out to be the turning point for the Las Vegas Raiders franchise. In all six previous meetings, the Los Angeles, then the San Diego Chargers, had beaten the Las Vegas Raiders. Being a new team, the Raiders were finding it hard to stand on their two feet. This changed when Al Davis took over as Head Coach. Having won only nine games in the previous three seasons, the Raiders won ten games in the 1963 season alone. This included beating the Chargers.

Even though the Raiders were trailing by five points in the fourth quarter, backup Quarterback Cotton Davidson turned the game on its head with two crucial touchdown passes. With the final score Raiders 34 - Chargers 33, the Las Vegas Raiders broke the mold and set themselves up for future winning seasons.

Winslow Goes Long – On Nov 22, 1981, Chargers Tight End Kellen Winslow equaled the record for receiving the most touchdowns in a single game. This performance also came at a crucial time. It was right after the Raiders had defeated the Chargers in the post season. And in the game the Raiders were leading 21-14 in the second quarter. Winslow scored five touchdowns to give Chargers a win with final score at 55-21. The feat of five Touch Downs in a single game by a player had only been achieved once in the past and once since. It still remains the record for the most non passing touchdowns in a single game.
