Both programs regularly produced national championship contending teams since then, only adding heat to the rivalry some fans refer to as the “Third Saturday in September.” This name comes from the fact that Florida and Tennessee have played on the third Saturday of September almost every year since 1992.

In the early years of this rivalry, Tennessee dominated. The Volunteers won the first ten meetings over a span of 37 years. Florida, however, came back and has held the advantage since then. In the last 15 years, Florida has won 14 times. Currently Florida leads the all-time series 29-20.
