The Pine Tar Incident, 1983 - In the July of 1983, the Kansas City Royals were in the midst of a game against the New York Yankees. George Brett of the Royals hit a two-run home run off Goose Gossage with two outs and gave the Royals a lead by 5-4 in the top of the ninth. But this didn’t quite sit well with the Yankees’ skipper, Billy Martin. He requested the umpires to inspect Brett’s bat. After examination, the umpires ruled that the amount of pine tar on Brett’s bat was indeed more than the amount allowed by the rule. This ruling nullified Brett’s home run and called him out. With Brett being the third out in the ninth inning and with the home team in the lead, the Yankees ended up winning the game. The Royals soon protested, and their protest was supported by AL president, Lee MacPhall.
