About Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers

In baseball, there are rivalries based on mutual hatred (Yankees-Red Sox) and respect (Braves-Mets). However, the White Sox-Tigers rivalry falls in a third category. Some rivalries cross the line, see players running out onto the field and fighting one another. The White Sox-Tigers rivalry is one such contest, which ranks high on the nastiest baseball rivalries list. The Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers have been in the American League (AL) since 1901. They both compete in the Central Division and have therefore played a number of regular season games, vying for the top spot. This contest has led to a storied history. Their fans have nevertheless enjoyed these moments, making most, if not all, White-Sox-Tigers games memorable.

Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers - Greatest Moments

June 20, 1980– In 1979, Al Cowens, a Tigers outfielder, was hit on the jaw by White Sox reliever Ed Farmer. In 1980, Cowens avenged by charging the pitcher rather than running out the ground ball he hit. This brought the two benches face-to-face, resulting in a brawl and a seven game suspension for Cowens.

April 22, 2000- This day has gone down in baseball history as the day when the harshest penalty for a brawl in a baseball game was given. The brawl between the two teams was noted for its nastiness and extraordinary number of suspensions. 16 members of both teams, including managers and coaches were suspended for a total of 82 games. It all happened in White Sox’s home, Comiskey Park. It started when Dean Palmer was hit by Jim Parque in an apparent retaliation over Jeff Weaver hitting a White Sox hitter the inning before. And what’s more, beer was thrown at Weaver from the White Sox fans as he left the stadium.
