Reservation Cancelled Hours Before Check In

We planned this trip for a year. My wife had trained 6 months for a race at the Pettit Center. We needed a place close by that took dogs. We reserved months in advance and got a confirmation email just 3 days before the trip. We drove 2 days and 1100 miles from NC. Just a few hours before check in, we get an email from the owner that the property was "double booked" and our 3 day reservation was CANCELED. We called VRBO 4 times and each time was told something different. We managed to find a hotel on our own.
