I am writing to formally file a complaint and request a refund for our recent stay at Hilo Reeds Bay Hotel, which fell well below reasonable expectations and significantly disrupted my family’s vacation. Upon entering our room for the first time, there was a gecko inside the room, indicating inadequate pest control. More seriously, we encountered ants in our clothing and personal belongings, and our children were bitten. This created a health and sanitation concern, especially for our family. As a result, we had to spend a considerable amount of time during our stay cleaning our clothes one by one to avoid bringing ants home, which took away from the vacation experience we paid for. In addition, the Wi-Fi was extremely unreliable and largely unusable inside our room, despite being listed as an available amenity at the time of booking. This further added to the inconvenience. There were also hazardous steps on the property that were not clearly marked. My wife and children tripped over these steps multiple times, raising serious safety concerns. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the risk was very real and distressing. These issues—sanitation problems, safety hazards, loss of advertised amenities, and the significant amount of time spent addressing these problems—were not disclosed at booking and materially affected the quality and value of our stay. Given the circumstances, we respectfully request a refund for this reservation.

The room was clean. The check in lady was friendly and it all went smoothly. Location is great. We enjoyed sitting on the waterfront, and seeing turtles swimming. Parking was not an issue for us. The room has a ceiling fan, two stand up fans, and windows can open to bring fresh air in. My son used their wifi which worked better than my AT&T data plan. Not a fancy hotel but very affordable.

I thought the place was a little janky and shady the first night. It looks like it was a military barracks in the past. The next day I saw more guests, and we went around town. Turns out, for the area, this is a half decent place. We had a corner room right on the bay, like, RIGHT on it. That was really nice. There's no AC, but the breeze flowed through there well.

We had a corner King room (320) that over looked the bay with a balcony. The views were stunning and we had a wonderful breeze. We even slept with just the screen and fell asleep to the sound of the ocean. The bed was comfy, the shower hot and all appliances worked (refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker). Room also has a kitchen with utensils and plates. The place is a little dated but super clean. Also note there is no elevator in this 3 story building. Easy walking to nearby beach, park and restaurant. Recommend and would stay here again.

We booked same day and had a room on the second floor with a king bed and balcony view right over the water! A beautiful view & the sound of the ocean was incredible to sleep to. Quiet cleaning service in the morning that doesn’t start until around 8:30-9am. For an older building, it’s well taken care of and very clean. Close to downtown Hilo, but fairly secluded from city traffic. Will definitely stay again!

As noted in the description, this isn't a fancy hotel. But it is cosy, great location, wifi (in common areas) worked well, there is a pool, and they had the volcano webcam on the video screen in the lobby (a plus for me).

After dragging luggage upstairs (no elevator), opened the door to a very dated room… think painted cinder block walls and dim lighting. Just 1 night, I told myself. Wife and I got settled on the full bed and after 2 hrs of scrolling, we’re about to doze off. Then… our bed collapsed. My wife’s side fell to the ground. Upon investigation, there are 3 6-inch wooden feet screwed into each side of the box spring (totaling 6). Of course springs are made of 1-in board to hold springs (NOT people). Spend the money and stay somewhere else if possible.

It looks like a studio transferred hotel, there is a mini kitchen with microwave, coffee machine, electronic stove, cooking wares but without smoke vacuuming. Convenient if you want to make simple heating. I dont like the hallway, it feels old and dark. They offer a nice coffee bundle. The surrounding is nice, but the road is complex, you don’t want to miss any exit.
